No two days are the same in the Starlight Express Room! Some days I’m busy at the arts and crafts table, other days I’m competing to win an intense game of Mario Kart. Nonetheless, my main role in the Room is brightening the days of children. My main goal is always to share a smile and hopefully, make someone’s day a little bit better.
I strongly believe that my purpose in life is to improve the lives of children. This has influenced my career choices and flowed through to my hobbies. I like to say that I’m a big advocate for little people. I find it so healing to connect with children, as their minds are moulding and their personalities are unfolding.
I had always heard about the Captain Starlights and thought to myself, “Wow, what an incredible thing to do!”. I love children and have always been driven to make a difference! So, I jumped online and started searching, that’s when I stumbled upon a Starlight Volunteer application.
My favourite part of volunteering is and will always be, the children. I have met so many incredible, brave, clever and strong little people. Their stories inspire me every day to be courageous and to be thankful.
I’m currently studying my Bachelor of Early Childhood Education and Care and being a Starlight volunteer has given me a more holistic perspective on children’s health, happiness and wellbeing.
If I was talking to someone interested in applying, I’d say “just do it!” Helping others will never fail to make you feel good. It’s so easy to get caught up in life, knowing only what we see, hear and experience around us. Doing something like volunteering with Starlight allows you to see a different reality. It opens you up to meet new people, learn new things and be inspired in new ways.
