Captain Starlight is a superhero from Planet Starlight. Our team of Captain Starlights capture sick kids’ imaginations and create a positive environment, filled with fun, joy and laughter.
Drawing on their unique talents, they’re highly skilled professional performers who help sick kids through their most challenging moments. Captain Starlights are a critical part of a child’s overall care.
Before joining Starlight, I was working as the Head Entertainer for a cruise company. I met a Captain Starlight on one of the cruises, and he told me about an upcoming audition to join the Perth team. That was way back in 2008 and the rest is history!
Since joining Starlight, my role as a Captain Starlight has changed with my life and my circumstances. This means I have been a fulltime Captain Starlight, a casual Captain Starlight , a part-time Captain Starlight in Perth Children’s Hospital and the Children’s Hospital at Westmead!
I’ve also been a Program Manager for the Perth team, managing the Captain Starlights and Livewire Facilitators there. I am now very happily and proudly the Captain's Coach in Perth, helping my fellow Captain Starlights grow as performers.
I love our team, I love our manager and I truly love everything about the role.
I think the things I love the most about my role are people I work with, Starlight's focus on positive psychology and their focus on growth and development also the kids and their families.
I also love the amazingly varied nature of the role, getting to visit remote communities around Western Australia with our Healthier Futures Initiative and being able to be a passionate member of a very supportive and talented team.
When it comes to learning opportunities, my favourite workshop I have ever done with Starlight was a Noongar song and language workshop with the extremely talented Gina Williams and Guy Ghouse.
That was life changing for me, and I wish everyone could do this one. I feel very grateful to have been given this opportunity as it’s really enhanced the interactions I have with families in the Starlight Express Room and when visiting remote communities through our Healthier Futures Initiative. Plus we are all trained in positive psychology, which is part of Positivity@Starlight, and I love everything to do with that!!
